Specifications.

Foam board (sometimes called foamex, though foamex is technically a different material) is a lightweight rigid display board made of polystyrene foam sandwiched between two paper or PVC faces. It is the go-to material for exhibition display boards, window displays, presentation panels at meetings, property-for-sale signs, and any rigid indoor signage that needs to be portable.

We print two ways: direct UV-cured printing onto the foam board face (more durable, slightly more expensive), or printing a standard paper poster and mounting it onto the foam board (cheaper, slightly less durable). For short-term use, paper-mounted is fine. For boards that will be handled, transported, or stored repeatedly, direct print lasts longer.

Frequently asked.

Direct print or mounted poster on foam board?
Direct print (UV-curing the graphic onto the foam board directly) gives a more robust finish that survives handling, transport, and storage – the ink bonds with the surface so it cannot scratch or peel off. Mounted poster (printing on paper, then bonding to the foam) is cheaper for one-off use but the paper face can scratch, scuff, or peel at the edges over time. For exhibition boards that travel, pick direct print. For one-use meeting presentations, mounted paper is fine.
5mm or 10mm foam board?
5mm is the standard and right for 90 percent of foam board orders from our Bracknell print shop. Light, rigid enough for A1 and A0 sizes, easy to hand-carry. 10mm is heavier duty, noticeably stiffer, and is worth the upgrade for very large boards (above A0), boards that will lean against walls for long periods, or boards that will sit outdoors briefly. 10mm also survives being dropped better, which matters for exhibition handling.
Can foam boards go outside?
Briefly, yes – an afternoon at an event, a short property viewing, a few hours at an outdoor exhibition. Foam boards are not weatherproof for extended outdoor use because the paper or PVC face absorbs moisture and the foam core can swell. For true outdoor signage, look at Correx (cheaper) or Aluminium Composite (premium) instead of foam board. Inside-facing windows are fine indefinitely – only direct rain or long-term damp affects the material.
How quickly can you print foam board?
48 hours from artwork approval is standard from our Bracknell print room. Direct-print foam board is slightly faster (no mounting step) than paper-on-foam. For urgent presentation deadlines (meeting tomorrow) we can often turn around a single A1 or A2 board in 24 hours – call us on 01344 269692 for the honest answer. Collection from Bracknell or free local delivery across RG12 and RG42.
What is the minimum order?
One board. Most foam board orders are one-offs (a specific board for a specific display, meeting, or exhibition), so a single-unit minimum makes sense. For multi-board runs (an exhibition stand with 4 matching A0 boards), per-unit cost drops with quantity because artwork setup is amortised.
